Protect Your Home

With FEMA-Approved Retrofitting

Older California homes weren’t built with today’s seismic code standards in mind. That leaves them at serious risk during earthquakes. The Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) program was designed to fix that. It helps homeowners strengthen their foundations and even qualify for state grant funding.

What is Earthquake Brace + Bolt?

An Earthquake Brace & Bolt retrofit securely fastens your home’s wood frame to its concrete foundation. If your house has a crawl space or cripple walls, plywood bracing is also added to stabilize those short stud walls.

Without these reinforcements, a moderate earthquake can cause your home to slide off its foundation, resulting in catastrophic damage. With an EBB retrofit, your home is better prepared to stay safe and standing.

Earthquake Repair Costs

Retrofitted vs. Unretrofitted Homes

An earthquake can be extremely expensive to recover from.

This chart shows that unretrofitted homes can cost anywhere from $100,000 to over $300,000 to repair after a major quake.

Homes that are retrofitted, however, experience far less damage.

Their repair costs are dramatically lower—often reduced by more than half.

How the EBB Program Works

Getting approved and completing your retrofit doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s what to expect:

Phase 1: Pre-Retrofit

You’ll have 12 weeks (90 days) to gather pre-retrofit photos and documents, and to hire a licensed EBB contractor.

Phase 2: Retrofit

Once your pre-retrofit documentation is approved, you’ll have 6 months from that approval date to complete your retrofit.

Phase 3: Post-Retrofit

Within 30 days after your retrofit is completed, all items must be submitted to EBB for payment through the Homeowner Dashboard.

Phase 4: Payment

Rebate payments are typically mailed within 4 weeks following final approval.
